Airedale NHS Trust v Bland
Citation:
[1993] 1 All E.R. 821 (H.L.)Facts
Anthony Bland, a 17-year-old Liverpool football supporter, suffered catastrophic brain damage due to oxygen deprivation during the Hillsborough stadium disaster in April 1989. He was diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state with no awareness of his surroundings and no prospect of recovery. For over three years, he was kept alive by artificial nutrition and hydration administered through tubes. Medical experts agreed that there was no hope of improvement in his condition. The Airedale NHS Trust, with the support of Bland’s family, sought a declaration from the court that it would be lawful to discontinue all life-sustaining treatment, including artificial nutrition and hydration, which would inevitably lead to Bland’s death.
