During the war, the Bolsheviks came to power in Russia and signed a peace treaty with Germany. Thereupon, the United States deployed a contingent of Marines to Russia. Defendants, a group of Russian immigrants, perceived the deployment as an attempt by the United States to suppress the Bolshevik Revolution and distributed leaflets in response. One leaflet accused President Wilson of “cowardly silence” about the intervention in Russia and another advocated a general strike and appealing to workers in ammunitions factories to stop the production of weapons to be used against Russian revolutionaries. The Defendants were then convicted under the Espionage Act.
