Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. v. Wetzel
The Respondents, Mr. & Mr. Wetzel (Respondents), claimed that the Petitioner’s employee insurance benefits and maternity leave regulations discriminated against women in violation of the Act. The Respondents moved for partial summary judgment only on the issue of liability and the United States District Court of Western Pennsylvania ruled in favor of the Respondents. The Petitioner appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the court held that it had jurisdiction over the Petitioner’s appeal and affirmed the District Court’s holding. The United States Supreme Court (Supreme Court) granted certiorari.
